Question VIN help

I just had front brakes (pads rotors and sensors) put on my 92 400e and the mechanic said he ordered 400 parts and they did not fit...then checked the VIN and it came up as a 300e. He ordered 300 parts and it is all good.

Can this be? I have 400e badges, a v8, etc. What else can I check? should I run the VIN somewhere else?

Or did early 400's have 300 ID's?

Just seems odd. I thought the 400 might have a little more surface area on the rotors/pads...for all the HP I need to stop.

Thanks for your thoughts!
John
