Hello everyone,
For past few weeks, I have been experiencing a whinning noise coming from the steering column when turning the wheel. It is most noticable inside the car while tuning the wheel when stopped but also occurs at low speed. Can anyone help? Thanks, Scott

You are hearing the transmitted noise of your power steering pump. Check the fluid level. If that's OK, then the pump could be on the way to failing..

Where might I check the fluid level? (Sorry, might be a stupid question) I can't seem to find it in the manual. And also, is there a special power steering fluid I should use? Thanks for your help,

scotty, look for a metal cylinder with a small rubber grooved screw on cap screw. Either on the right front or left front side of the engine.

THe noise is most likely low fluid.

It gets louder as you turn the wheel, which from my personaly experience with various cars of all kinds over the last few years, thats usually the case.

Go to your parts store and buy a quart of Power Steering fluid. Don't use ATF, modern ATF has additives that are not good for the seals in your power steering unit.

Good luck,

Recently too, I’ve been getting a noise. Mine however is only heard when the steering wheel is turned close to the lock position. Strange too, is that I can duplicate the noise with the car not running and the key removed from the ignition. Could it be that I just have to grease a bearing on the steering column?? I checked the power steering fluid level and it looks ok.
