The oil return line between the turbo and the oil pan has two sections. The upper line section is very easy to remove but the lower line section is not as easy.

According to the service manual, I should "push lower line section slightly down and force contoured sealing ring out of oil pan" and then "pull out lower line section in upward direction together with countoured sealing ring". When I tried to push it down, it did not move. The countoured sealing ring is at the bottom end of the lower line section. I do not see how the pushing can force the ring out of the oil pan.

I can cut the sealing ring to make the removal of the lower line section easier. I prefer to follow the instructions if I can understand what the manual trying to say.

Also, is it hard to push the lower line section with new seals back into the oil pan?

I have outlined the easiest method to do this procedure (thanks to Stu Ritter, technical editor of The Star and his staff at Stu Ritter Mercedes in Denver for the technical information) and it is located at the following link:

Richard,

Thank you very much. By reading your procedures, I now understand why the service manual calls for "push lower section down". It is really hard to push down or to install the lower section by using the instructions in the service manual. But using your method, I should be able do it myself without problems.
