Need confirmation...
I just pulled two lines from the fuel distributor on my 1989 560 SEL. When the gas came out of the fittings, it was orange in color. The gas inside the distributor is orange as well.
I take it that this orange color is rust, and indicates that my fuel lines need obvious replacement. Please confirm, if you can, my take on this. Respects, Andy |

Andy, do you have particles of rust floating around, running problems??? Most fuels have a yellowish/orange color to them anyway excluding Amoco Premium which is clear. If it indeed is rust I would think you would see some floating around in the distributor.

Thanks for your reply.
I do have idle problems and very bad gas mileage. Although I don't see huge particles, the gas is brown. Not the normal yellowish that you speak of. When I soak it up with a paper towel, it leaves a brown residue on the paper towel. By the way, the idle problems really happen when the car is warm, over 80C. Andy |

have you tried running some form of fuel cleaner in the tank? Or maybe changing fuel filters every couple of weeks until it clears up. Seems to me that would be easier than replacing fuel lines. If you have an Amoco station near you their premium is clear, you could use that for a few tank fulls along with several filter changes as a short term test to see if it resolves your idle problems. It sounds like your car may have been in storage for a while with a low tank of fuel. Is this correct?

Thanks for your reply. I don't know if it sat for a while or not, buy when I bought it a year ago, it had 87,000 miles on it. Not a lot for an'89. Yes, I've got slick 50 (Could not find bg44 near by) in it now.
I've installed an in-line fuel filter, and some of the issues seem to have gone away. Got this idea from a search of the messages. I think taht you are probably correct in your assumption that it sat for a while. I think what I'll do is replace all of the fuel lines (maybe not the ones feeding from the fuel distributor) and hope that that'll take care of the problems. The only problems that I have now is a very minor idle stumble, almost barely noticeable. Thanks again, Andy |

Berryman makes an excellent fuel system cleaner as well and can be bought at most all Wal-Marts. Just another option you may want to consider.

560 sel fuel lines
Hi I have a 91 560 sel 145k miles..with what appears to be fuel problems..when I get it started it runs rough.. and when I give it gas it dies. I think my fuel lines are rusted.. I take off the lines going to injectors and there is so little gas coming out I cat tell what color it is..I have not changed the fuel filter.. I know there is a filter in the distributor but I am not quite sure where I would like to change that as well.. any idea where the filter for the ditributor is.. btw the filling stations in out town are nortorious for having water in the fuel.. Im thinking of putting another filter before the fuel distributor if this proves to be the culprit..I think we have the same problem..good luck
