Alternator removal

I'm trying to remove a dead alternator from a 85 300D. I managed to loosen the upper bolt that connects to the adjusting bolt. Can't loosen the bottom bolt to save my life. Can I just remove the entire assembly including the bracket and then remove the lower bolt? I think the lower bolt is the pivoting bolt. I was under the car for an hour today and that bolt tight as a drum. I tried a search on this issue but did'nt get a clear explanation of the procedure. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
