94 E420-Aux Fans... how to replace?

Folks,

Anyone replace the aux fans on their 124 (or similar vehicle)? Can you share the steps? Do I need to remove the radiator thus requiring a fluid change? Do I need to disconnect any A/C parts thus requiring A/C service? Do I need to remove front bumper (or will it make the job easier)?

I need to replace mine as it's not pretty obvious that the brushes are wearing down.

Oh... I did a search and did not find anything specific... although I was looking for a post I read recently from someone who has done it... but can't remember the title.

I think I will replace the relays also. I just have a bad feeling that they may be problematic again.

I currently have the fans running full-time until the replacements come in today. I did this by unplugging the coolant sensor.

Last night, neither fan was running. I tapped on both of them and nothing. Then, a slight movement of the hood got them going again. Of course, one hood hinge is near where the relays reside. Coincidence? Not sure, but the relays can't be that expensive. Anyone know the part numbers OR if this is a dealer only part?

Still need help on disassembly of fans.

I just replace my aux fan on my 91 300E, the right fan would run when I tap on it. I saw the problem after the fan was removed, the fan have sucked a lot of road dirt that may caused the fan to short out. As I already brought a new fan, the old old would be my spare.

Here is what I did, the job takes about 3 hours:

Remove the center tube, where the horns are mounted, three bolts hold the tube. One is top, one on bottom, one behind the radiator. you would need to remove the two radiator clipz, and tile it back to gain access to the bolt.
Remove fan guide. You will need to pull hard, be sure you don't damage the guide or the A/C tube in front of the fan
If you have problem with the right fan, you would have to remove the headlight. But in either case, I suggest to remove both fans to clean out all the dirt behind.

Do the fans slide out together as one unit?

Did you need to remove the radiator, thus removing the trans cooler lines and draining the unit? Did you have to remove any of the radiator hoses?

No....just push the rad back to remove the bolt. You need to remove the center tube with horn.

Why does the right healight have to be removed? I don't see any increased access. I assume you mean the driver's side light. Do you have a photo?

Al, I don't remember which head light needed to be removed/loosen. But you will see quickly, once you have access to the fan.
