Hello - I am new to MB and have questions
Hi Gang,
I just purchased a nice 1992 190E with the 2.3L 4 cylinder engine. I am new to MB vehicles and have some questions. The car has 117,000 miles on the odometer but seems to be in very nice shape. The engine / trans do not leak any fluids and it gets about 21 mpg city. I have no idea about the maintenance history; do I need to do any manditory maintenance such as timing chain etc. to keep this engine alive? Thanks in advance,

The engine is a four cyl. version of the M103. Look at the following link for oil leak info:
M103 Oil leak or burning? The engine is very sturdy. As in any car, it will need ball joints, tie rods and shocks. The timing chain is very sturdy and will usually last to 150K to 200K miles given proper oil changes. Use the search function to look for 190E or M102. OVP and EHA would be a good search too. Keep us 'posted' as they say.

Welcome to the wonderful (and sometimes really frustrating) world of MB ownership. You'll find pretty much all the answers to your questions now and in the future under the search.

Hey Chazola, really new owners need their hand held at first. After a short time, they can be kicked out of the nest.

Just my opinion but 21 mpg sounds a bit off for this 2.3 as I believe it should be getting between 27 and 29 combined! That is what I got with my 85 190E also with the 2.3 BusyBenz.. |

The M102 engine, at 100K miles, is probably due for a new timing chain tensioner, oxygen sensor, and possibly valve seals. Since you don't know the mainenance history, it would be wise to get a compression check and to start a documented maintenance program by flushing all the fluids and starting fresh. As for the other parts of the car, have a good look and the front and rear suspension hydraulic/rubber/flexible parts.
As for the MPG, getting low to mid 20's average city/hwy, is not unheard of. |
