Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil Life

I have a 94 S500 w/ 140000 miles, and have been changing the oil myself at about 5000 mile intervals using Castrols High Mileage Oil 10W40. The car seems to be running perfect; if i switch to synthetic oil, can I really change my oil at 10,000 mile intervals?

Also, if i burn some oil, is it mandatory to add synthetic or is it okay to mix synthetic with nonsynthetic oil?

Finally, what are the benefits that some of you have experienced after switching to synthetic.
