Question 300 sl 1991

haw would I know if the auxilary fan or the fan clutch not working

On the fan clutch it's a very subjective thing. The hotter the clutch gets, the more "locked" the fan should be to the hub. You can try getting the engine very hot and then shutting off the engine and it should be harder to turn than when the car has been sitting over night.
The electric fans should come on with the AC on, assuming it's a hot day and the high side pressure is high enough, OR if the engine temp is very high (close to overheating) then the fans will run even FASTER than the AC will make it run.
