vacuum problem?

I recently bought a 1983 300d as a project car. The brakes only work if pumped and pressed to the floor, the transmission stays in low gear and the door locks don't work. Could this be a vacuum problem? Where is the best place to start checking?

I'd start with the brakes and your description doesn't sound like a vacuum problem (for the brakes).

thank you

I had the car towed to our local independent mechanic to have the brakes checked. I will try and deal with the vacuum issues when I get it back. Thanks.

vacuum booster, etc.

My mechanic says the car needs new front calipers, pads and a vacuum booster. The booster alone is going to cost about $400. Ouch!
