W140 front power seat question

The power front passenger seat on my S 500 L has an unsual problem:

If the selector to move seat forward or backward is pushed it only moves the seat forward, i.e., if you want to move the seat to the rear and push the buttom accordingly it will make kind of a "click" sound and will move the seat forward (???).

The only way I can move the seat backward is to push one of the memory buttoms that previously had a setting on the seat moved all the way to the back. This, at least, proves that the motor can still work in that direction.

Any suggestions on what to look for will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Changing the operating switch worked for us. Perhaps it's worth a try.
