Help! How do I replace shift knob on '86 300E (Automatic) ?

My dog literally chewed off half of the shift knob. It looks terrible now, and will probably make the car hard to sell. How do I replace the knob? It feels like it may be molded onto the shift lever... please tell me it isn't! What should I do?
