At what point do the anticipated maintenance/running costs of a 140 make feasible the contemplation of a 12-15 year old Bently Turbo R?

I think the Di death car was actually an armored S280!

As soon as I can afford one. :D I really like Bently/RR, the old world quality is hard to come by these days. Unfortunitly or fortunitly depending on how you look at it, the snob factor is threw the roof with them.

No. Her car was not armoured. In fact, it was not even her car. It was leased by the hotel she in Fayed stayed. The car had been stolen the previous summer/fall, stripped of usable parts and recovered. The car was then rebuilt/reworked - there was some question as to the safety of the vehicle after this work was completed - mainly to the brake system. This is also PROBABLY why the car has the 8 hole wheels instead of the steel wheels with wheel covers. Also, the car was midnight blue with a charcoal interior.

As I posted before, the S 280 was the base entry model for the W140 lineup.

It had the M104 engine, 2.8 liter, 4-cyl.

Although, as I said before, the S 280 came standard with a manual 5-speed transmission, no A/C, cloth upholstery and steel rims with hubcaps, most buyers ordered this model at least with the auto transmission and the optional 8-hole alloy wheels (just to make it a little more interesting). Leather upholstery, being an almost $4,000 option, was not a very popular option.

The car where Lady Di died could not be armored as the S 280 barely move around the W140's weight. Armored cars at this range where mainly S 500s and S 600s, which could move around the extra weight gained by armoring.

Many reporters, as some uninformed people think so also, thought the car was armored because of the double pane windows the W140 fitted as a standard feature (mainly for sound proofing and temperature isolation).

The M104 engine was a 6 cylinder. It would be stretching the imagination to think that MB would use a 4 cylinder mill in an S class. :rolleyes:

Best car I've ever owned. I'm the second owner of an always garaged and dealer serviced creampuff. The only non scheduled maintenance I've had to perform is to replace the air mass meter(<$300). I've had it since June 2002 and only use it on long trips, vacations, etc. Even though the 140's are routinely bashed on this forum, I don't have a bad thing to say about mine. :sun_smile

Thanks, a lot of people seem to like the I6 W140's. From my understanding the two big ticket common items are the door close assist pumps break and teh Bose amp goes bad. W140's go through window regulators, but I have fixed two on my SDL so far so W126's do to.

Knocked on Zebrano ! Seriously, I just answered Hatterasguy's question honestly. I know others have had different experiences. I've got broad shoulders though, so if I'm asking for a flaming I can take it! :D

So sorry, you are 100% correct. The S 280 had an M104 2.8 liter 6 (SIX!) cylinder engine. Just got confused thinking about the E 200.
