For those contemplating the egr tube roto rooter job, you can get a speedometer core kit from carquest for $7.99 (part number PIO CA-4000)

If you are planning on keeping the car for a few years, it's worth it to replace the pipe, the new ones are updated to prevent this. I assume you are talking about the M104 engine.
