300TE Serpentine Belt Tensioner
1992 300 TE - where is the tensioner - any particular tools needed?

It is slightly below, behind and further toward the center of the engine than the power steering pump. If you look in that area you will see a wedge shaped scale and a pointer.
Good luck, |

If it's the same as on the 190E, you must first loosen the securing bolt on the idler arm pivot, then adjust the tensioner nut, then retighten the securing bolt. Also, if the tensioner has never been replaced, the rubber could shear (or has already) - leaving the car undrivable - and require replacing the whole assembly.

You MUST remove the outer plastic fan assembly and the fan shroud. Also bolts that are common with the power steering pump need to be removed. I changed my tensioner on my 103 engine when I replaced my radiator. It gave me a bunch of room. The area between radiator and engine on the 103 engined Mercedes is extremely tight. Have fun. Have some beers on handwhen you begin to swear. You can do it.

Tensioner - that was easy
Thanks for the help guys. Once located, I studied it for a while, saw where the pivot and tensioner was, easy once I learned how it worked.
Love the fact that I did my repairs, preventive maintanence, and brakes THIS TIME and saved the $1600 typical bill.\ Many Thanks! Jeff |
