Alternator Brushes

I `m going to change the alternator brushes on my 560. Is there anything else I should change, and what can I use to clean it?

Thanks
John

I would check the bearings in the front and back plates. They fail with age. The plates are usually sandblasted to clean them. You could check the voltage regulator. The stator usually doesn't fail and neither does the rotor. It depends on if you are removing the alternator and taking the whole thing apart, or just replacing the brushes.

the problem I have is that the battery gets run down when it sits for a day or two. It has 13,85 volts when running with the ac on. When I went to start it this spring the battery was dead. Never happened before. The only change to the car is that I installed a factory CD player last Fall. The car has an Optima battery

Is 13.85 volts enough? Could the CD player be drawing current when off ?

Thanks
John

That sounds like a battery problem more than a charging problem. Did the installation of the CD player coincide with the problem? A bad battery can kill an alternator and a bad alternator can kill a battery. People can get stuck in vicious cycles. I think the best test is to disconnect the battery, charge with a charger (as opposed to the car's alternator ) , and then let it sit for 12-24 hours to see if it holds the charge. The battery tester that draws a high load is best.

The problem stated after the CD player was installed. When I installed it with the car off, it ran when the power wire was attached. I don`t know If thats normal or not.

The battery is 3 1/2 years old.

Had the battery checked...dead. Ordered a new one. Wish I knew why it died. I`ll use a battery tender when I store it this fall.

Thanks for the help

I would guess that the new CD player has some draw on it that pulled the battery down too far and effectively 'killed' the battery. I would recommend measuring how many amps are drawn off the battery when the car is off. The trick here is to get an ammeter and attach it to the chassis and the neg terminal, then detach the ground strap. If you detach the ground strap and then attach the ammeter you'll get a surge (charging capaciters) that'll blow your multimeter's fuse.

Also, if the alternator is charging above 15 volts it'll also kill the battery too.
