HELP!!!! No functioning gauges on my SL
Earlier today everything was finewith my '83 SL. Got in car to come home from work. The water temp., oil pressure, fuel gauge, speedometer, and RPM gauge were all DEAD. Zip, nodda, nothing. The only 2 guages working were the "economy and the clock. At least with my '83 TD the speedometer and oil pressure are actually mechanical. A direct feed for oil pressure and a cable for the speed.
I know there is oil pressure because I looked under the oil fill cap and the cam oiler had oil running from it. I need some ideas here. Is there a fuse that controls all this? Actually I'll get a flashlight and check, but I need some ideas quick as my '83 TD is out of commission with a bad alt. Also, my turns signals are dead as well. All lights on the car work. HELP!!! |
Check fuses first, then ground wires for the cluster.
|
If it's not the fuse or grounding, check the 12-pin round connector on the left (as you face it) side. It isn't really locked in place and it can get loose and slip off.
|
So with these cars, the oil pressure and speedometer are electronic?
|
You know, I was wondering about that too. I was under the impression that the electronic speedo, oil, and economy (vacuum) gauge started in 1986 with the 560sl.

Fuses are fine. Just to add to the mystery. Even though the turn signals don't work, the hazards do. I am still learning about these cars, I don't have any manuals on it. I imagine that the instrument cluster comes out like our Benzes, you basicly push it from behind?

Once this happened to my 300E. All the fuses looked fine BUT, the one fuse that supplied the cluster was in fact bad.
