Sunroof Insulation Removal Without Dismantling Ceiling?

When I open the sunroof on my '97 S500 (W140) there is a clunking noise and something is impeding the full retraction of the sunroof. It still slides back all the way though, it just bangs and stutters a bit. When I close it again there is a very sticky reddish glue-like material on the last 1/3 of the glass. By reading other posts I have found that the insulation material inside the roof behind the sunroof has deteriorated to the point that it has come unstuck from the roof, and is hanging down and interfering with the sunroof retraction. A large piece may have fallen down completely and is now getting smashed further back into the roof cavity when the sunroof retracts. I DON'T want to try to remove the sunroof by removing headliner, etc., as others have described. Is there a way to fish out the material that may be back in there without taking the whole ceiling and sunroof apart?
