Should I write-up a DIY article on W124 blower R&R?
 

I spent the last couple of hours removing the blower from my 89 300TE. I managed to successfully remove the plastic squirrel cages from the motor shaft as well. Those in the market for a new blower know that saving the cages is saving $150.

I also removed the blower motor regulator and redid the thermal compound that lives between the transistor and the heatsink.

Basically I took a 4 1/2" angle grinder and cut up the motor, then used a drift to tap the shaft out of the plastic cage, backed up by a large socket. I photographed the entire thing, so if there's demand out there I'll put together a DIY article.

Dear Robert: If you begin on this excellent idea, maybe you can suppliment with notes on sl (107) models. Note no regulator, reostadt instead of chips. good luckAbe G

If somebody will donate a 280SL I'll donate the article :o Actually I've never even been in an SL.

I've always liked the SL but I much prefer the M103 motors. Has anybody seen a 107 with a M103 motor?

107 has blower resistor not reostat and the blower is too simple. What would you describe... remove screws, remove blower.

I'm impressed that you got the squirrel cages off.

About five years ago the blower in my '90 300E quit. I bought a new motor intending to move the fans over to the new motor like you did. Well, I couldn't get them off and didn't want to chance breaking them.

The problem with the old motor was that it was locked up. Well, I worked it loose and put some oil on the shafts/bearings and reinstalled it.

Amazingly, it has worked perfectly ever since.

BTW, I enjoyed your article about replacing the U gasket. Except that you posted it about a month after I did that job on my car! :P

Finally got junkyeard motor into my blower. following cautions: 1) Be sure to remove small screw (s) from firewall side from Resistance plug. No DIY instructions advise this, and if not done will cause pigtail plug to break. (found this the hard way even after lots of research). Most plastic housing from original cars are age rotten! Be sure replacement housing is free from cracks and missing parts. I salvaged and used epoxy where ever needed, and frankly although everyhing is working NOW, I dont have much faith in longevity.
