M112 Harmonic Balancer Failure.. & Related Damage - Labor Estimate?

A friend's '98 ML 320 (75K miles) lost the harmonic balancer, which subsequently damaged the timing cover, oil pan and serpentine belt. The dealer's service advisor denied knowledge of any problem with these balancers but offered to waive the parts' cost and charge only labor. The labor total came to over $2200, at $75/hr.

Just how many hours are required to renew the front timing cover and oil pan on this vehicle?

I Would Contact MBUSA...asap!. Mercedes knows about this problem!I Would ask them to goodwill this since this IS a Known Problem! The Service advisor is just trying to see if you will pay for the LABOR..Since Most Mercedes dealers ..Service advisors get paid on LABOR ONLY!...Give it a Try!..The Problem Still is there !
I Have seen Several of them launch!Including my 2002!

Good Luck!

I 'm also very concerned about about the harmonic balancer in my 98ML320 with 72,000 mi on it. I just had the mercedes dealer check the balancer and they said that it loks fine and does not need to be replaced. But do you guys think that I should have it changed anyway, as a precautionary measure? Is there a way to see if it is about to go?

Labor for the main oil pan, front cover, damper, & related parts should be around 25 hrs on the ML320.
MB does know about this problem!!
IF anyone has a M112 & M113 engine, get the damper replaced with the modified version. List price is only $70. & with correct tools the job can be done in under 3 hrs on any of the affected engines!

CRANK PULLEY RECALL-Harmonic Balancer failure

The harmonic balancer failure is directly related to the failure of the crankshaft pulley bushing going bad, as I understand it, This is a common problem. My 98 e320 just had the crank pulley replaced UNDER FACTORY RECALL!!!It appears MB has finally recognized the problem. EVERYONE IN THE SOUND OF MY VOICE PLEASE CALL YOUR LOCAL MB DEALER AND ASK ABOUT THIS RECALL. I found out about it by accident, my local mechanic shop was going to replace my crank pulley because it was squealing on start up and when they went to get the part they were told about the recall. Because they are honest, they relayed the information to me and viola! I took it to the dealer and they replaced the pulley and the belt at no charge. I was told this is a very recent recall so CALL THE DEALER. I had my work done at Rader Mercedes Benz in Augusta, GA. Hope this helps somebody.
