little metal flag

I repacked the front bearings on my 1988 300e. But on one
side, there was a small metal flag like item that broke off. It
was located at the end of the spindle and was easily
bendable.
What is it and is it crucial to the function of the bearing assembly?

Thanks in advance,

bluebenz

To the best of my knowledge it isn't crucial to the bearing assembly, I believe it is a static suppressor for the radio.

He's right. .It is made of brass and the finger touches the grease cap dimple.....It reduces static build up in the rotating wheel assembly.
I have left them out with no noticable radio interference.

Hang a chain from the rear bumper, just touching the road...makes real pretty sparks at night !
