V8 to V7 conversion
This is a strange request I know but, I have an '85 380SE I have been driving for around 18 months now. I got it off of some friends in need. Long story.
It has always had a dead miss on #2. Compression test says its weak (65lbs) and looking at the removed plug I suspect its a broken ring. I plan on using this car as a doner for the SD project I am working on. 'Till then I am going to drive the life out of it. My question is: Is there an easy way to clamp off #2 fuel line so its not dumping raw fuel out the exhaust? Will this upset the fuel injection balance? Flame suit on. But its a challenge now to see how far she goes before I have to part her out. Just can't justify the expense of a rebuild on this one. BTW, the PO never changed the oil in the two yrs they had it. Its odometer stopped at 231K before I ever got it. Amazing how tough the MB engines are. |

Pull the valve cover and look for a worn out cam lobe -- this is more likely from no oil changes than a broken ring -- broken ring will make it smoke pretty bad from excessive blowby, and it would both use oil badly and foul plugs rapidly. More likely is a burnt or non-opening valve -- this will cause low compression and oil fouling.
Worth a try, a cam swap is easier that fixing a broken ring. You can remove the injection line and just plug the hole on the fuel distributor, it won't affect the other lines. Peter

The cams look good in this car. Very little smoke as the plug never fires. I may do a leakdown to see just where its going. I don't think I could fix it easy without alot of helicoils regardless of what it is. Nothing comes apart on this thing without the threads coming out.
The PO had a stroke and needed a car. I bailed 'em out and ended up with it. I would never be able to sell it in this shape so, I thought I would get some use out of it. I plan on using the diff in the SD. The body is rust free so theres alot of good straight parts there. I'll need the LF fender, grill. Then the rest will be available for parts when (if) she dies. I'll try plugging the fuel line. I wanted to make sure it wouldn't affect the fuel pressure(s)... Regards, Dan (carrying my phone always) |

Take the line you are trying to plug to a hose rebuild shop and see if they can match up/order you a cap to install on the hose end. Our local hose store is a place called "Tubes N Hoses". Typically, if he does not have it in stock he can order it.
