107 Help !?!?!
Hi all..
This is my first post.. I came accross this site.. and couldnt have come at a better time..
I aquired a 85 380SL... I got it for a steal and figured it was my new toy.. However, there was a catch (there always is).. anyway.. the catch was.. the timing chain jumped the track and bent 4 exhaust valves and jammed the pistons pretty hard.. not to mention scored the cylinder walls.. the engine was already out of the car and i figured... ok.. i might as well make the investment to rebuild her so i dont have to worry...
ok... just got the call from the machine shop... he says i need to check into having the block re-sleeved.. he suggested going from the factory alum. sleeves to steel ones.. however.. he wasnt sure if we could get the correct types of rings... said something about how the metal fatigues under the heat and all... also.. i might need new pistons and such.. as you already can gather.. i am heading into some serious $$$$'s to fix.. i am looking for advice.. suggestions on what to do... should i get a new junk yard engine and go from there.. or should i dump the money on this one... the heads are going to run about $800 (plus parts-4 valves and new valve guides) and on the block.. he mentoined something about $800 for the re-sleeve and if i have to get new pistons.. he didnt have a price on those.. but after searching around the net.. i'm looking at another $1000-$1500 for those.. all total spent so far is about $3000+ on the high side... then we have to get gaskets and all the other fun stuff..
i'm lookin for some help on this... please give me your input..
thanks, eric
