Oil filler cap won't come off.....
its on my 96 Dodge Ram truckwith a 318....When I turn the plastic filler cap counter-clockwise it just clicks like a clutch to prevent it from overtightening is failing to engage. Can I just drill through the plastic cap and insert a long screw to keep it from slipping?? The engine was hot.....I'll let it cool and see if that helps...
Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help on a non-Merc issue.....

I assume the clockwise comment was to stress what happened when you tried to make it even tighter...becasue counter-clockwise is what it takes to remove it.
don't drill....debris will get into motor....

When you turn counter-clockwise it clicks just like when it is turned clockwise......sorry I wasn't more clear in the first post as I miswrote.......

Let it cool off first...........get a new one.....and worst case pull the valve cover to where you can access the fingers that engage the cover underneith, you can forcibly remove it that way. Just a thought....someone else will come up with a different idea today.

I'd try large chanel lock pliers first, but it may also possible to pry/break off enough of the faulty cap to allow you to remove the remains without removing the valve cover. Have new cap in hand first.

Using a pair of channel locks I was able to remove the outside ring which left the filler plug still in the valave cover. It removed easily with channel locks. I put it back in and will pick up a new one.......thanks!
