Auto-dimming mirror for W126...Possible?

I know it's probably a waste of time, but thought I'd ask. I'm going to have to replace the rearview mirror at some point, and would consider upgrading to auto-dimming if one were available that would fit in the stock position. I've no interest in gluing a button to the windshield and hacking something up from the aftermarket.

Any chance, or pipe-dream?

I purchased a photochromic mirror from a GM car a year ago along with a 107 mirror with the intention of making a burl-finished mirror housing for it- but no progress yet! I've used one though and I really like them. A great invention.

That would be a big help. My e-mail on the forum is valid.

Rik has installed the auto dimming mirror (with the Homelink systesm) on his former 190E and now on his 500E. He has some illustrated descriptions at his website.

Hmmm...I may be able to do that with a GM-style mirror, as they have similar ball-socket placement, and are all over E-Bay for not much money.

Step One completed: Got a GM auto-dimming mirror on E-Bay for 35 bones, including shipping.

I don't know how the w126 mirror is mounted but it was VERY simple to mount a newer mercedes auto dim mirror in the w124 platform. I did it to my e320 just as Rik did to his 500e. I picked up a black auto dim/homelink mirror out of a 00 C230 for 24.xx plus shipping. They're not really common on ebay but they do come up a few times a month.

I don't know for the U.S. market, but Mercedes-Benz do actually manufactures and offers an original auto-dim mirror for the W126.

Part Number is: B6 681 8602

The special equipment book states this part is for either the sedan (long and shortwheel bases) and the coupe.

You can check with your local dealer if that part number is available or can be imported from Germany.

UPDATE: Not as easy as I'd hoped, but done and working. The mirror sits a little further away from the windshield and about 1/2 inch lower. I cut up the GM mount and ground it to fit the MB support, then I drilled and tapped and stuck it together with a screw. I got switched power and ground from the sunroof switch, and didn't bother with the reverse wire.
