Oops.. Transmission fluid into the engine.

My cousin accidently poured in 5 liters of valvorin maxlife transmission fluid into the engine dipstick hole on 1995 e320. The engine was not cranked or started with the transmission fluid in it. I drained the engine oil/trans oil mixture out of the engine and changed the oil filter. How long should i run the engine before doing another oil change to make sure all the trans fluid is out? SHould I use one of those engine oil drain fluid you use 5 min before an oil change? Any help would be appreciated. ---The engine leaks oil from head gasket, would engine oil drain fluid make it worse?

I'd run the engine for 30 minutes at low idle...and then drain and change again.

Some people actually add transmission fluid to their oil just prior to changing it.

Transmission fluid has some detergent properties to it.

If this is an engine that has regular oil changes during its life, and you did drain the crankcase completely and changed the filter, I would run it almost as far as a regular oil change interval. The residue that was left after draining is not enough to worry about very much.

in fact

in fact marvel mystery oil is tranny fluid so a little in the
engine wont hurt...

probably will clean the inside of the engine for this upcoming head
gasket your about to do.

I ran the engine for 30 min at idle and drain the crankcase again. When it was draining out I was able see a layer of tranny fluid on top of engine oil coming out . I think it was a good idea to drain the engine again. Anyways thanks for the replys, but I really look forward to head gasket change . BTW my aunt doesn't take care of her cars. Sometimes she goes 9000miles on fossil oil, so I doubt this car was well maintained

If you think she goes 9k between changes....I would change it every 1500 miles for the next 4-5 changes. I think I would use one of those 10 minute flushes or some Marvel or some tranny fluid...and do the idle thing for 30 minutes agian..

but, I am really getting ahead of myself...look inside the crankcase from the oil filler..... see if the engine is gunky. I wouldn't want to accuse you aunt of not taking care of the car.

Jeez, do her a favor while you are at it...... drain the torque converter and tranny and put 7 quarts of mobil one in it....

suck out all the old power steering fluid and replace, drain and replace radiator fluid and then suck out and replace brake fluid.

You can do all this with a minimum amount of time or money. You will have to suck out the power steering fluid 3 or 4 times over the course of a week or so. Brake fluid about the same.

The purists don't suck out those fluids, but I am trying to save you time and effort while helping your aunt.

Plus the car will be very happy.

MMO looks and even smells a little like ATF but it is QUITE different. It is MOSTLY solvent of some sort. If you were to mix about 80% kerosene and 20% Type A ATF you would have something roughly similar to MMO.

Oh my!

Keep your cousin away from the car.

Just drain and refill with oil. If you are really worried you can run some motor flush through the engine.

While ATF has MUCH different properties than oil, the residue will NOT be a problem.

ok

right before i did my m103 head gasket i took a qt of gunk internal
engine wash and put it in the oil and let it iddle for 5 minutes.... and when i pulled the valve cover then inside of the engine was beauitful...
and when the head was off the rest was clean too....

then i did it on a saab turbo and the turbo went bad... so i think that if you have a turbo and you loosen the garbage up and the soot and coke goes to the turbo it will ruin it....so i think there are some cases when you just need to leave the sludge alone......

so use good judgement.

Haha. thanks. I did all those except changing power steering fluid. Apparently MBs have power steering filter? I will try to disconnect a hose on power steering reservoir and drain it from there. I've done the last 4 oil changes for her every 2000 miles so hopefully there is not much sludge in engine. She used synthetic when she went 9k miles, so it didn't do too much damage.

You don't have to mess with the hose.... there is a filter...4 bucks.... you can suck out the old fluid once a day for 4 days and it will come up clear.

it takes a couple of minutes to get to the filter..

just trying to save you time and grief.
