84 300 D Turbo Engine Oil

In 84, Mercedes specified a gasoline engine lubricant for it's diesel engines. Now there are many lubricants specially formulated for automobile diesel engines. Which specification should I now be using?

you really need a diesel rated oil for soot control.
you can economically run mobil delvac 1300 , rotella T, or chevron delo 400,
all 15W40. all 3 available in gallon jugs at walmart. do a search on any of those products for the specs. + loads of info.

I would also add the Castrol GTX 15W40 to the list. I have run this in several of my MB diesels with good results. The Shell Rotella 15W40 is also excellent and recommended by lots of truckers. The real key is to change your oil and filter religously every 3000 miles. Doing that I got over 300K from all of my diesels and the engines were all still in great shape.

yes, and there is also a valvoline 15/40 diesel rated. as you say 3000miles or
3 months changes will ensure a long life. i have done over 40 oil changes on my engine and it uses very little if any oil between changes. as someone here is famous to say ''change oil hot and change oil often"


also, since the OP is in richmond he doesn't have to worry too much about super frigid winter temperatures where different oil may ease cold startups.

Thanks guys.

In case anyone is interested, I just had the U joint in my 88 300 SEL replaced by a local machine shop which has done a few of these (Mercedes and BMW). I was able to find a U joint via NAPA (hard to find these). This has eliminated the vibration problem between 2-3rd gear.
