260E in limp mode

The 87 260E has been showing some strange behavior lately.
Every now and then when driving normal perhaps around 35mph, the car acts as if the power to the engine has just dropped to none, the accelerator is always half pressed while this happens, speed drops instantly, and I then have to keep constant pressure on the gas pedal in order to avoid the car to just shut down. After about 5 to 10 seconds (random), the power just comes right back.
I have tried to look for loose cables, loose plug wires etc. Even put in fuel injection cleaner but nothing has helped.
I have read many posts where ASR problems put the tranny in limp mode. But given that the 260E doesnt have traction, where else can I trace this problem to ?
thnx in advance.

No ASR, no tranny limp mode, just a power loss. The first place I'd look is fuel pressure. If your fuel filter hasn't been changed in a long time, it may be due. There's a current thread about a guy's "cossie" that has an excellent checklist of things to go through.

Another possibility is that you picked up a load of water in your last fillup. Try a can of "drygas" to help it on its way.

thnx,
that water possibility could be a cause as well. as I did notice that this just started happening right after I had refilled gas.
