I have a '92 MB 500SEL and I have been trying to figure out how to remove the geat shift lever knob in order to replace the lever shutter. I was told that the top of the leather shifter must be removed so that the rest of the leather shifter can be removed. I can then slide the new shutter down over the metal part of the shifter. My problem is I cannot figure out the key to removing the top of the knob. Does anyone know what the secret is?

On my 1992 300SE, the shift lever is pressed straight down and turned counterclockwise about 120 degrees and then it comes straight out. Be careful and do not get it "cocked", keep it very straight. The fitting it goes into (the yoke) is made of extremely cheap pot metal with a very poorly designed rim that holds the spring retaining washer in place and it will strip off. Don't ask me how I know. About $35-40.00 at the dealer.
