Best year for Benz 4-matic ???

At present I have a 240D,but am thinking about getting a Benz with 4-matic drive. What is the "best" model year? Were the early versions troublesome?I'd like the earliest year, assuming it would be less money, that wasn't a "bad" year for 4-matic.Also,I'm guessing the older, the less complicated the car.Is there a diesel 4-matic?? Thanks for any help.

MY 1998 and newer are pretty much bullet proof. Do a search on the forum.
Older versions are sometimes called $-matic.

I have read somewhere that the early "gen 2" 4-matics had some issues in the ML, primarily with transfer case units.

Other than that, which seems uncommon, they later 1998- 4-matic units are a VAST improvement over the early ones. They're not as sophisticated, which is a godsend. Some people swear by the early 4-matics, but every tech I know uses words like "run away" when you talk about the earlier version 4-matics.

As posted before, pre-98 4-matics are real NIGHTMARE!

Complicated, expensive to mantain and fix, and be sure they will brake sooner than later.

I friend who bought a brand new 300E 4-matic just returned it back to the dealer and demanded a new regular 300E since five out of seven days of the week the car was in the shop (the other two days did not count as it was the weekend).
