Aftermarket Hi-flow Catalytic Converters......
I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with aftermarket cats.....my 98' CLK 320 92k has developed a humming/rattle/vibration and I've narrowed the problem down to my cats. With the cost of a new straight pipe w/ cat at a whopping $1500, I was thinking of going aftermarket. You know, the kind where you have to cut off the old cats and weld the new ones onto your existing oem straight pipe..... Anyone with any personal experiences?

I may be wrong here, but isn't the emissions system covered by a 100K/no time limit warranty?
Aside from that, are you sure it isn't the heat shields and not the cats themselves?

The biggest problem is that you will be hard pressed to find 2 cats that will sit beside each other under your car. If you do, I can almost guarantee that their capacity will not be sufficient. I tried such a replacement and constantly got the P0422 code showing up literally every drive cycle. I took those "high performance" pieces of junk off, and went with a single Magnaflow converter which has a guarantee against bringing in that code. Go to their website and have a look at their universal stainless cats. They are not expensive and any good custom exhaust shop can adapt your system for a single cat. My C36 hasn't had any complaints with the one on it.

Aftermarket cats on 1996 & later cars JUST won't get the job done very long!
IF you live in an area that has SMOG testing you will be lucky to make 2 tests with them!! 8yr/80K miles WAS the USA emission warranty! Now it is 7yr/70K miles!

There are high flow by less substrate material and high flow by good design. Ceramic and metal. You can get good aftermarket ones for less than stock ones. I would buy some and take it to a shop to install instead of buying whatever the shop is selling.
As for codes...if the tailpipe is emmiting clean air but the cell is lighting, you can get a spacer that places the probe a little further out and that USUALLY prevents the cell.
