Oil Specs for 300E
I inherited this fine car. And an almost worthless User Manual.
Further, many Chilton and other books also don't address these issues: (The User Manual says to go to MB shop with wallet open & credit cards out... and throw yourself on the mercy of the cashier ringing up your billl ;-) For several changes, at 3K miles the oil was slightly amber; this oil change at 2,500 miles it was almost black. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, so I ask: 1. I can determine the weight of oil to use, but what grade and spec? (SF/SG/SH, etc..?) 2. Should I use detergent oil (have 90K miles on odometer.)? 3. Should I use "oil for older engines"? 4. Should I use the "cheapest oil that meets spec"? 5. Is there a preferred brand? 6. Is there a brand to avoid? 7. Should any additives (Like STP or Lucas products) ever be used? 8. Ditto on the above for oil filters (I have been using the L24466) Thanks for any help, or pointing me to a website or in the right direction. B.H.
