'01 Jetta Sluggish, Gas Smell
I know it's not a mercedes, but... It is German, does that count?
Wolfsburg edition, it's running somewhat sluggish and is giving off a distinct smell of gas from the exhaust. However, no trouble codes. Anyone out there have a Jetta or familiar with one? My first guess is O2 sensor. How do I check it? Should the voltage be about .45 at idle warmed up? TIA

I would suspect a faulty O2 sensor to give you a CEL & set a code. If you want to check the sensor, warm up the engine, backprobe the signal side of the O2 connector & you should read an oscillating voltage of @ 0.1 to 0.9 volt. Remember, a 4-wire sensor has 2 ground wires, 1 - 12 volt ( heater ) wire & 1 signal wire.

OK, I failed to mention the CEL came on briefly 2 or 3 times, but is not currently lit. Anyway, figuring the code would be stored in memory, took the car by Autozone where they hooked up the scanner and retrieved a bank 1 oxygen sensor code. A universal sensor was $60 (supposedly the wiring should match right up, but it has to be spliced on).
Question: which one is bank 1 oxygen sensor? Do I have to crawl under the car or is there access to it from somewhere in the cabin (i.e. under the carpet)? Thanks!

This is a 1.8 turbo 4-cyl. I got the O2 sensor out last night but noticed it is a 5-wire. The generic I have is only a 4-wire. Looking online, noticed that this 5-wire type is something called "broadband." Anyone ever heard of these? Is there any way I can adapt the generic 4-wire to substitute in its place? What is the 5th wire for? The reason I ask is that going with the generic sensor will save me about $150 + tax.

Where the heck are you ordering these sensors? Just go online. The bank 1 sensor which is before the cat is like $50 online. The bank 2 sensor post cat is about $90. Both OEM Bosch.
Go to fastlane part shop above or go to... http://www.alloemcarparts.com |

german yes, mercedes no!
this o2 sensor is known as a nerst o2 sensor and uses a different concept of reading the o2. it uses a pumping cell in the sensor to pump o2 into a chamber and compares it to the cars exhaust.DO NOT try to instal a 2 wire conventional o2 sensor you will have more problems and mil lghts on. these cars had several problems such as the vaccum suction pump plugging up with carbon. it sits ubder the intake manifold(not fun to cahnge). also if the turbo boost valve leaks you could have vaccum leaks. It sits at the top left side of the engine with a vaccum hose to hit. check with vaccum gauge. also checkfor any other vaccum leaks. I changed many of these o2 sensors due to 'sporadic no response' codes. Are you sure it has 5 wires ? a conventional one will have 4 ,2 for the heater circuit and 2 for the sensor. the nerst one uses 6 wires.

You are short on information
We need year and tenth VIN# digit. Better yet, the whole VIN #. These cars are prone to a variety of pattern failures. Without the above info' it is not possible to remote diagnose. Try this site for searchable info'. http://www.vwvortex.com/ .

VW having issues with MAS/MAF (Mass Air Flow Meter.)
Also the coolant temp' sensors..#059 919 501 A. Check with your dealer to see if any covered under warranty and if above part # applies to your vehicle. .

Update: I replaced the front bank O2 sensor with the proper one. Old one was somewhat carboned and discolored; it was obviously in need of replacement. Car now runs great, no longer sluggish. However, the gas smell persists. Since it's running fine and apparently not rich, I am guessing this could be caused by vapors under the hood coming in through the vents or HVAC? But I seriously can't find any fuel leaks anywhere - any suggestions on leak-prone areas to check under the hood? Are these things known to seep at such low mileage?
Also, the CEL came on once or twice, despite the apparent "normal" performance. After replacing the O2 sensor, I did disconnect the battery for several minutes in order to reset the diagnostics. However, I am doubtful that this was helpful, since the radio stored the station presets. I haven't taken it to AutoZone yet. Is there a way to make sure the system was cleared? Can failure to clear it cause the CEL to come on again?

You Have To Get The Code Errased For Your Mil To Stay Out, Unless Of Course You Have Other Problems. You Could Have All Sorts Of Common Problem Codes, Such As Coolant Temp. Sensor(should Not Be Black), Maf Sensor To Name A Few. As For Your Fuel Smell , A Common Place For Leaks Is At The Fuel Pump. The Large Plastic Nut Might Not Be Tight, Especially If Some One Was In There. Lift The Seat And Remove Cover To Inspect.

OK, not sure if this is related to the previous issue, but check engine light came on again. Autozone pulled codes and this time the error code is "vacuum leak" or something to that effect. Incidentally, the turbo or the engine or something sounds VERY loud at startup, and then quiets down after the car gets hot. Is there some type of vacuum switchover valve that kicks in once temps go up? I'm thinking if there's a vacuum leak, the waste gate might not be sealing properly. Is the waste gate vacuum regulated, or electronic, or both?
Any thoughts?

As I mentioned before...there are a few pattern failures on these cars.
First off the MAF causes lots of MIL 'on' codes and the CTS (Coolant Temp' Sensor) fail. The new CTS are now Green instead of Black Then the fuel tank cap...hangs open so the tank pressure EVAP check fails. The fuel canister/pipes and hoses crack and split. Roll over valve fails too. Called Gravity Valve by VW.(# 1J0 201 752 $15.00. #6 on ill' 201-15 ). There are two hoses for the crank case fumes, that run from the motor to the intake trunking just prior to the throttle body..these split and collapse. Difficult to replace and only $90.00 each ! You may need to inlist help from shop with smoke machine. .
