AC question

Okay, so my new (to me) 300D with AC decided I should be punished for thinking how nice it was to be back in California where I actually wanted to use my AC in December. Was running fine, then squealed for 3 seconds before the belt snapped. Now the pulley spins, but the front of the compressor doesn't. PO had recharged with R134 a few months ago, but I have no idea how well cleaned out it was. I don't have the time to redo the AC now. Is there anything that is going to get WORSE if I don't rip it apart now. I figure I am going to have to follow Diesel Giants instructions either way. Even in Sunny California I have a few months before I really need it. Don't want to cause more problems by letting it set though.

Compressor is siezed. Since the belt is off, you're fine for now, but a job of work awaits you. I'd disconnect the electrical connector to the compressor just to keep the clutch from being actuated for no reason.

I agree, it can't get much worse. Leave the belt off and unplug the compressor. You will have to decide if you want to stay with R134a or go back to R12 when you replace the compressor, etc.

Okay, thanks for the input. I will disconnect the electrical and add it to the bottom of my to do list. I don't have a stock of R12 hidden away so unless someone wants to give me a hand I will be going with R134a. I just want to get the system clean. Not looking forward to doing this once, and I definetely don't want to be doing it twice!

Since you have a lot of time to repair the a/c, there's a lot you can do now to prep the car for repair. For starters you can disconnect the plumbing and flush the system at your convenience. Also shop for a compressor and dryer, looking for a good deal. Try eBay or other online sources (ackits.com, aircondition.com). Just keep the openings capped to prevent moisture and contaminants from entering the system.

Once you have the compressor and dryer, all you have to do is install them, button up the system, vacuum and recharge.
