'93 500E. Transmission problem...reverse only
Hi all.
New on this great site. My '93 500E, flawless 'till now and with 126K miles, has lately developed a transmission problem; only on Reverse and only when it has reached normal operating temperature (80 to 90 ) . It takes 5 to 10 seconds to engage and then slips but moves very slowly, while the engine revs higher than normal. If going reverse on a slight incline, it will not be able to move at all. The wise thing to do (but expensive) is to bring it to the shop, but at the risk of making it worst, I would like to see if there are some basic checks/test/adjustments I could do myself (handy with tools with electrical / electronics background, but definitely not a mechanic) Questions: 1) My brother-in-law, the Saturday mechanic that he is, suggested to try the Transmatic additive. He thinks that given these symptoms, it might work well. Has anyone tried it, or any reasons not to try this ? 2) I read several threads on vacuum lines, modulator checks and pressure cable adjustments. Any proven procedure out there to follow on this? The xmission filter and fluid were replaced about a year ago. Appreciate any input. Thank you. Paul |

Try search feature on B-2 piston & seal. Most likely a problem with bad teflon seal for B-2 piston, causing excessive clearance on that band.... can be repaired in the car.
