how to open up an ovp?

Hi Guys,

1992 300E m103

p/n on my ovp is 201 540 38 45.

My car wont start, sounds like no spark. Started and ran fine the other day. Not a daily driver. I wanted to open it up and check solder joints but can't seem to figure how it opens up. Metal seems to have no seam. I've seen pics of others that the metal split.

Thanks, Jeff

I think I recall opening mine up 2 years ago, and if I remember right, you pry the crimped aluminum case around the base (the piece with the pins in it) outward with a thin screwdriver blade, then gently pull it off in an upward direction. Much like the cruise control box and 'cube' relays. Look at the pictures in the previous post's referenced thread and notice the groove around the base. I think that's where the metal edge is crimped into.

Hi,

Yeah, I saw that one. That metal case seems to split in 2 halves. Mine seems to be whole and after bending back a couple crimps, neither the cover or the plug end will pull out.

I decided to just order a new one from Phil.

Thanks, Jeff

My car is outside, so I can't look right at the OVP, but the metal piece in the pictures with the cover off I believe is a heat sink, inside the aluminum cover. To get the cover off, ALL the crimping all round has to be bent out....at least on mine, yours may be designed differently.

2 fuse

Hi,

Phil sent me a 2 fuse ovp. Is this ok to replace if i had 1 fuse?

Car still wont start. Don't hear any cylinders firing. Gonna do more checking tomorrow.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff
