New to Mercedes World, 1984 380SL

Hi all,
I first want to say...what a great place. I am just starting to work on a Mercedes Project...the car came with the new girlfriend. and its alot different than my 351C in my Cougar.

Here's the deal...when the car gets semi warm the idle will go way up, up so far it the car will do at least 15-20mph on its own without the brake on. I have read other postings and started to check out the Idle control Unit, the airslide, and temp sensor, over voltage regulator and various other electronic components, only all this is new to me.

What is the logical order to check these parts? Which one I do one first and how? And am I missing anything>>

Thanks for all of your help already and I look forward to "hopefully" getting this car in good running condition...not to say it doesn't already, it does but needs a few fixes. I just dont want to screw anything up.
