How high should the RPM's go when you first start the car?

I know that most (if not all) fuel injected cars when you first start them, will have a moment of "fast idle" then it slows down. Every fuel injected car I have ever owned has done this. I am wondering though- on a older V8 Mercedes (Mine is a W126), just how high should it go? Whether the engine is cold or warm, mine instantly goes to 2500 RPMs when it first starts the quickly goes down. It seems to me that this may be too high of RPMS, considering there is not much oil at the top of the engine at this very moment - or is it? The oil meter immedietly goes to "3", but still I am sure that oil still does not have enough time to get up in the engine that fast - correct me if I am wrong.

It seems like a lot of unnecessary wear on the engine to me. Everytime I start my car, I cringe when it goes that high. Most of my cars in the past go to 2000 rpms, but never one that went to 2500 rpms. However, I think that my grandpa's 90' Mazda goes this high.

What RPM's does your car go to when you first start it?
