500SL, dumping gas into exhaust...
Hey Guys and Gals,
New to the list, have a problem with wife's 91 500SL...running very rich, sluggish unless it's floored, dumping gas into exhaust, pipes was glowing a very bright red...any experience with this problem? Thanks, Gene |

Whatever you do don't run the engine until repaired, the excess gas pretty much fries the catalatyc converters. I am not familiar with non MAF engines, but first thing I would check is the fuel regulator. You may have an injector stuck open too, that could be causing fuel to flow into the cylinder. If it is that much it is very bad, can mix with the oil, and can ruin the cylinder walls/Bearings. Either the fuel distributor or the regulator is bad. Also check that the cold start injector is not stuck open, or the controls (sensor) is operating properly. Good luck.

i am not familiar
with the fuel injection systems on that car, but on older cars with conventional or traditional systems, red exhaust can also mean retarded spark. i dont know how this would affect the fuel injection on your engine but it might be worth checking ignition timing while you're at it.
