If I hadn't completely rebuilt the front suspension at the same time it probably would have taken only about three, maybe four hours.

That’s about right..Although sometimes the guide rod mounts are so corroded it can really slow you down:-/

Corrosion is your biggest problem.
http://mb.braingears.com/126_DISC1/program/Chassis/33-615.pdf Don't use a press to insert the new ones, use a large wrench on it's side to knock the new ones in. Make sure the seam is aligned with the drain. You may want to get the complete replacement. http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1KN038G9V1QF00N8B5&year=1987&make=MB&model=300-SDL-001&category=L&part=Suspension+Brng+Brkt

You will need an alignment. Measure the rod length, or count turns/threads, and reinstall. Once you replace these, you may find other components need to be replaced, like sway bar bushings, ball joints, pretty much everything.

...And be careful where you buy the parts...
I bought both of mine on EBay. The left side fitted perfectly, and took about 1 1/2 hr to install. The right side was a real disaster. The threaded rod was just barely able to be turned at all, and had to go in all the way to the end of it's threaded portion. Both replacements were correct fit for my car, but the set that worked came with the correct new bolts and steel 'wing' nut retainers. I don't know why the right side was so hard to turn, as the thread was the same and there was no problem getting the old one out.
There's several amusing threads on here describing the ways to pull/push the front knuckle assembly forward to allow unthreading and inserting the rod, involving come-alongs, spring removal techniques, chain around a tree, etc. (or used to be until the great server crash awhile back). I used a port-a-power, recommended by Steve Brotherton, with great success on both jobs. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/66169-w126-guide-rod-bushing.html#post443816
