Will the engine idle without opening the throttle? How is your electrical systems voltage? 13.5 or better? If it idles most of the time, and then stumbles when you quickly open the throttle, your Ignition system is probably weak. When it refuses to start at all, do you smell gas? As far as spending big bucks on the ECU, (KE control unit), they're the last thing thats probably bad, unless you went around giving stranded motorists a lot of boosts. Get a known good used one if all else fails, just to try. I have been in a few units, they are very solidly built and its most likely NOT YOUR PROBLEM. Start with plugs, wires, rotor, cap. leave the fuel system for last, they're basically bullet proof. Only use the specified plugs listed in your owners manual, VERY IMPORTANT. If your Ignition coil is original and has a stamped sheet metal center body design, get a new one for 66.00 bucks. A good spark is hot white blue in color, and not redish orange. And, are you a diy type?
If your not, better find a good independent Mercedes tech..... There are way too many complex systems in your car, for your average tinkerer, and small diagnostic mistakes are not tolerated well with these cars.
