Hood prop rod

When i opened my hood tonite on my '92 E190 to change a blown fuse, i tried to close the hood, and as it went down, i heard a small pop. I raised it up, and the Hood prop rod seemed to have come done. So as of right now I can close the hood with some work, or raise it to the full position. I tried to figure out how to put it back to gether, but i have no luck. Any ideas on what i need to do?

What's the hood prop rod? These cars generally don't come with a prop rod, they're spring hinged to stay up when the hood is raised. There is a lock on one of the hinges that you have to remember to release when you're bringing the hood down from the vertical position, but I'd imagine that would be pretty hard to miss.

My 190 has a "hood strut" (read, hydraulic arm)that holds the hood open in the 45 degree position, but this isn't what i'd call a servicable part! Check fastlane if you need a new one...it looks like they are 45 bucks.

well the hydrolic arm is not nessarily the problem, the problem is that it snapped off from the car body. I don't know how to attach it back.

Well, it's tough to tell what your problem is, but if the lower mount has broken, you might have to have something welded. I would try a body shop for that type of repair...

So did the metal piece that is a part of the car break, or did the strut itself break? Or did neither and the strut just came loose?

cheers,
