My 1981 mercedes is stalling when in gear.
When I am in drive and push on the gas and rapidly back off the vehicles sometimes stall (regardless of tempreture). THe idle is about 750rpm. The timing is pretty far advanced. Will change spark plugs and the idle selenoid has been changed, because the car was idling at 1600 rpm.
If the car is warm and at idle and I give it gas and rapdily let go of the gas pedal the rpm drops so fast it alsmost dies, the same thing happens when I am in gear, so when i am driving and back off the gas it's very abrupt. Is there a manual I can buy for this car, haynes or something? |

Mine will occasionally stall too, but only when fully warm, on the "second" trip out and when placed in gear. If the engine temperature is below 80*C, it will not stall. A couple of times it has even stalled out when I stop at a traffic signal.
It seems as if it could be the "idle control valve", I am told. I have not had a chance to remove mine. They can be checked I am told. You can unplug it and if the RPMS go up then it is working properly. If not- I think it can be "cleaned" out or something. Mine has not done it so much lately, so I have not been too concerned. What is your car? I know it is a 1981, but what body style is it and what engine does it have?

Mine is a 380sl with the 3.8l.
The idle valve has been replaced and when I unplug it the rpms go up. |

I love those 380SL. Nice cars.
Oh yeah, I just went and read where you mentioned in your original post that it was changed. My bad. So,you have eliminated the ICV problem. Hmm. I am unsure then. How long has it been since the plugs and plug wires were changed? I think you mentioned you are changing them soon. Have you did that yet? BTW - my car has the 3.8L too. |

no, haven't changed anything yet.
Bought the plugs today and can't find the wires locally, any recommendations? The wires have cracks on them and electrical tape, so that might be something. Do you ever clean the throtle body with throttle body cleaner? Should you, that helps a lot with the rest of my cars, but Mercedes is new to me. |

Fastlane or Perfromance Products carries some quality replacement wire.

Okay, changed the plugs, the wires and set the ignition timing to tdc (I am at 5000feet, so I advaced it 5 degress for that), as opposed to the 10btd and the stalling stopped. THANKS
Now I am having some transmission issues, but will open a new post for that. THanks again for your help. Last edited by dima4855; 02-25-2006 at 02:26 AM. |
