bad harnesses--- not the 87's through very early 90's.

i should add that i like the 103 engine coupled with the 124.... more than enough power that has space to wrench.

msethk 03-08-2006 09:58 AM

the 124's and early 202's still appear to be good cars, minus the wire harness. I don't want tobe argumentative but I think it is a little premature to talk about the reliability of a 2006 model.

I thought the same thing msethk!

Considering the average person seems to just lease or trade their car in every couple of years, the auto makers are building for this crowed. They want the latest toys and don't care if they break because its under warranty, ect.

Kudos to Jag though, they have been working hard for a long time to bump the quality up. Since 2000 is is starting to show.

This is a prime example of what happens when you let bean counters that can't even change a spare tire run the company.

Hi Marko,

(Long time no post)

Would I be far of the mark if I suggested that the beginning of MB without a frame was the beginning of other problems as well?

Hey Strife, with 6, 7 and 8yr financing now available, you'll be seeing plenty of those 90-00 autos...They may not be running, but you'll see em...LOL

I just bought a 92 500sl, 7250.00 great condition oehr than high freeway miles 200k.
Beautifull car in every aspect. What other car with the looks and safety can you get for 7K. I will have 2 SL's, one to fix while the other is down.

There you go again - it's immature to say I told you so.

A woman I know boasts about Lexus reliability, but I told her that I already knew, as I owned one that was a good car. I feel my Mercedes is reliable too. It is 21 years old, has 265K miles and still runs good, with everything still in proper working order.

She is dreadfully rude. She mustn't be rude, she makes us ashamed. Me, me, me- thats the only song she ever sings.

Enjoy!

Considering this is still 2006. I'd like to hear what you have to say next year. I'll agree with you on the 126 chassis. I think that was the best S class ever since the 108 chassis. It had just about everything you needed without the fluff. How much trouble does it take to adjust the rear view mirror with your hand? The 140 chassis needs a friekin knob on the center console to do it and what if you turn the knob and the mirror doesn't move? I had an 87 560SEL years ago, and it was one of the finest cars I've ever been on the road with. I new car prepped the 116 chassis and I always thought it looked like a Ford Fairmont. Never liked those cars.

As some have eluded to here MB has taken the course to put every Joe Lunch Bucket into a new MB with payments he can afford. MB wants to take the old MBs off the road. This evidenced by the fact that an EZL module for an early 90s car is $2900. That is rediculous. It shouldn't be more tha a couple hundrd $$. The list goes on. As someone has pointed out with an airbag example, we are scrapping perfectly good cars, because of rediiculous parts prices. Forget about a few more miles to the gallon to reduce oil consumption; just look at all the resources used to make a new uneeded car.

In conclussion: I'm sticking with the 124s and 126s for as long as I can. I keep telling my wife that I'm not looking forward to the 140S, and I'm a semi retired MB mechanic with a full blown shop full of tools, complete library, and diagnostic equipment.

MB least reliable

A salesman at our local Benz dealership told me way back in 1995 that after 1992 the cars just are not the same and he was right...my mechanic also told me something of the like, he said."if you want luxury buy a benz...if you want reliability. buy a toyota. I bought both...toyotas for daily drivers and a 91 300CE because I love mercedes coupes.

You actually got reliability in both. Your 91 CE is very reliable. I picked up an 89 300CE to sell. It was a beautiful black with tan leather. It had an Alpine and 6 CD changer in the trunk with chrome rims. My wife saw it and said it was her car. Who's going to argue? THe one feature you have that she doesn't is the hold the key and close all the windows and roof. I wish I had that. The one feature that she has that you don't is that if the fuel pump relay craps out, I can jumper it with a paper clip. You need a computer. If her computer craps out, I throw it in the trunk and complete the trip, and you're screwed. I'm assuming you don't have a MAS unit. If you have a rare 91 with a MAS, you are in better shape.
