rear shocks on 1980 300 SD

After a lot of tire kicking I purchased a 1980 300 SD off
a local car lot. It needs shocks and I had success with
the front end of car. Now on the rear the shock is inside
the spring. My coworker tells me the spring must be compressed
to replace old shock. Started to take seat out to access the top
of shock. Can anyone offer me some advise in this process?
Thank You.

your friend

however well meaning is wrong. you dont have to do anything except unbolt the top and bottom and drop it out the bottom. be careful with the bottom bolts as they can rust and stick and are easy to break off when rusted. use some pb blaster and be careful to wiggle them back and forth at first.

Your friend is correct, if the body is not jacked sufficiently high enough. The shock, with the piston extended, is rather tall and it won't extricate itself from inside the spring if the vehicle is not fairly high in the air.

If you don't have it sufficiently high, you can jack up the trailing arm and compress the spring to give you some additional clearance to remove the shock. However, it's safer to simply raise the rear high enough and block the body before you do the job.

true

but a spring compressor is not needed.

and if the car is sitting on a ramp, no other things wil be necessary.

did mine on 380SE about the way the Brian said. Did not have any problem getting old shock out but when installing new ones had to put jack under trialing arm also to get top bolt into hole to put on nuts. Kind of a trial and error system until it worked.

.........just lower the vehicle down off the jackstands and onto the wheels...........then put the nuts on.
