'86 420SEL Timing Chain Guides: Continued
Ok, I got everything apart and pulled the pins, first on the upper inner guide on the driver's (left) side. Now the guide won't come out past the chain and sprocket. What's up? The manual suggests that it is not necessary to remove the sprockets to get the three upper guides out: it does not say to remove the sprockets, etc. Thanks!

Are you doing this with the front chain cover off ?
If not, there is a pin you've missed down lower in all the power steering dirt. .....................with the new upper chain guide in hand,offer it up to where it would be and eyeball for the lower pin location. However, I always renew the upper sprockets along with a new chain/guides, so getting guides out was not a problem. ..

Hi, No, the front cover is not off. I have both pins out of the guide, and it is completely loose; it just will not pass out past the sprocket, chain, etc. I am replacing all three upper guides, the tensioner rail and tensioner, and the chain, cam lube tube plastic parts, as well as some hoses and misc parts which will be convenient at this time. Cam lobes are all very smooth, there is no sludge, and everything looks pretty good for 20 years and 149K.

Did you try turning the rail 90° and then slipping it out? It isn't the easiest thing to do, but it can be done.

I had to briefly remove the gear when I did mine - but the chain had to be a little loose to do this, and I had my cam followers and tensioner removed. I don't think that removing the gear would be a good idea otherwise. I was so paranoid about dropping a guide into the engine that I managed to get wire through the holes where the pins were, so that they couldn't be dropped.

I tried the 90 degree thing; it was too tight to come out. I am going to get the other guide loose on that side to see if it gives more room and maybe they both will come out. I did not apply too much force; after all, if I have to force the old one out, how am I going to get the new one in place?
