Dead Smog Pump Damaging Engine?
The smog pump on my '75 450SL is toast. When I got the car there was no belt to it & the pulley is seized.
My question is: Is there any harm in just leaving it there like that? I ask because I am trying to diagnose a "stalling when warmed up" problem, and am trying to rule ouut any & all possible culprits. Thanks!

It's hardly a problem at all...unless your vehicle is subject to smog testing.

The pump injects air into the exhaust ports or manifold, and hot exhaust is prevented from entering the pump by the use of check valves. Pump failure is often a sign of a failure of the check valves. I don't know your model, but if intake is from the air cleaner, then these failed parts could allow hot exhaust gases unrestricted entry to the intake, which will cause running problems in some conditions. Just a thought.
