I have an 86 190E 2.3 that, after replacing the ft. wheel bearings, i can't seem to keep the spindle nut in one place. After readjusting the endplay, I snug down the lockbolt on the spindle nut and it always works itself loose after a few hundred miles. Question; Is there some really high torque required on the lock bolt? This is really embarrassing for someone with my vast mechanical skills! Please advise!

No, It sounds as if the bearing is locking up and running the nut off. You should adjust the nut to zero tolerance with no preload then tighten the 5mm allen down.
