91 300E eating gas

Recently my 91 300 E died in my driveway. It was driving normally when I parked it and when I went to go out again 30 minutes later it was dead. I had it towed to a shop where they said it was a valve. After further inspection it was determined that the valve was not needed. They did tell me that their equipment was not old enough to figure out the problem but they were able to get it running even though it devours gas and is putting out 10% CO. I have to rev then engine for 3-5 minutes when starting cold to prevent dying and the car regularly sputters and even stalls when coming out of a stoplight.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the problem?

One possibility could be a broken OVP relay, or a blown fuse in the OVP relay. It is clustered with a couple of other relays behind a black plastic panel behind the battery. It is the relay with the red top and a fuse underneath a clear plastic cap. Check the fuse. A search for OVP or "overvoltage protection" relay should bring up some more information.

There could be also a number of other reasons for this, and you should probably find a good shop if this isn't the problem.

The problem is the shop that says the valve is not needed

As anthonyb says, check the OVP relay. Better still, take the car to a shop that knows these cars.
