380SL will not start.
Hi Guys
I have this problem with a 1981 380SL. The car was running fine then sat in the driveway for about 6-7 weeks and now she will not start. If I splash a little gas down the intake she starts right up then dies. SO .. Check things out and no power at the fuel pump. You can run a hot wire to it and it clicks. Next check was the relay and jumping pins 1 and 2 on the connector or 30 and 87 on the relay and power to the pump! But she still will not start. So my next thought was... disconnect the fuel line at the injection system and power up the pump and see if fuel squirts out. But here is the hard part.. Without a shop manuel ( Yes I need to get one) I can not tell what line to disconnect.... OK please go here and look at the pictures and tell me what line is the one from the fuel pump. http://www.neflnewhomes.com/mtemp/1981sl.htm Thanks Scott |

E Is The Warm Up Regulator, That Control Fuel Pressures During Warming Up And Operating Pressures.
D Is The Speedo Cruise Acutator B Is The Feed From The Fuel Pump, You Should Slack Here And Check For Feul And Pressure +/- 5bar C Is The Return To Tank |

Be careful of fuel pressure ( 5 bar is 5 x 14 PSI ) if pump is running and you have no fuel in either of those two lines, the filter is blocked,if you have changed the filter (which must be done at least annually) then the fuel pump check valve is seized( it's in the nipple that fuel outlet line on the pump is located). If you have fuel, get an assistant to turn the engine over with the igniton while you gently push the large disc in the fuel distributor down. This will allow an overich mixture to be injected .if the car starts you have either a fuel pressure problem( sick pump or pressure accumualtor) or the fuel dstributor spindle valve is sticking ,something which is not unusual in a car that has'nt seen much use.
Do not use the acelerator when trying to start any mercedes. that device in your pic is the fuel cooling line ,it cools the fuel in hot weather by runnning it over the suction line in the AC system. It's to prevent vapour lock in warm climates..Florida right? |
